❓ What Does This Utility Do?

Seamless Document Utilities is a specialized tool designed to enforce a clean, logical structure in your Google Docs outlines.

Core Function:

The script specifically looks for two consecutive paragraphs that are both formatted as Heading 5 (H5). When it finds this error, it automatically demotes the second Heading 5 to a Heading 6 (H6). This fixes structural errors that lead to messy tables of contents and confusing document navigation.


🔧 Basic Troubleshooting (FAQs)

1. The Menu Is Missing!

If the “Heading Tools” menu does not appear in your Google Docs toolbar:

  • Did you install it? Ensure you have successfully installed the add-on from the Marketplace.
  • Reload the Document: The custom menu only loads when the document is opened. Refresh your browser tab to load the script.
  • Check Permissions: If you are a new user, you may need to accept the initial script permissions. Try opening the document again.

2. My Headings Didn’t Change!

If the tool ran, but your document still looks messy:

  • Check the Style: Ensure the paragraphs you are trying to fix are actually styled as Heading 5. The tool only targets two H5s in a row. It will not fix consecutive H1s, H2s, H3s, or H4s.
  • Check for Non-Standard Breaks: The tool works on consecutive paragraphs. If there is a line break, image, or table between the two H5s, the script will not see them as “consecutive.”

3. I See an “Authorization Required” Error

This means the script’s access permissions were revoked or not properly accepted initially.

  • You must click through the prompt that allows the script to view and modify the document it is attached to. This is necessary for the script to perform its function.
